Alfred Unser Jr. was born on the 19th April 1962, in Albuquerque, New Mexico USA, and is a retired professional race car driver, best known as a two-time Indianapolis 500 winner while driving for such teams as Forsythe Racing, Shierson Racing, and Marlboro Team Penske. Unser’s career started in 1982 and ended in 2007.

Al Unser Jr. is a son of Al Unser, and a nephew of Bobby Unser, who were both Indianapolis 500 winners. By the age of 11, Al was already participating in sprint cars racing, and following high school, he competed in the World of Outlaws series. Unser won the Super Vee title in 1981 and later the Can-Am title in 1982.

Also in 1982, Al debuted on the CART circuit, driving for Forsythe Racing, and although suffering a personal tragedy when his sister died in an accident, he continued to drive and ended the season in 21st position. The following season, Unser competed in both CART and the Indianapolis 500, recording 7th and 10th finish, respectively. While competing for Galles Racing in 1984, Al recorded his first win, and ended the season in the 6th place, then in 1985 he finished second only a point behind his father. Unser had notable results in both CART and Indy 500 by the end of the ‘80s, recording several top five results, helping him to increase his net worth significantly.

His first win in the overall standing occurred in 1990 season when he drove for Galles/Kraco Racing and collected six victories and 210 points in total. Two years later, Unser won his first Indianapolis 500 race, while in 1994 he managed to win both the Indy 500 and CART, which additionally improved his wealth, making him a multimillionaire. By the end of the ‘90s, Al had two top five finishes in the CART series, but after the 1999 season, he decided to retire from driving CART.

From 2000 to 2007, Unser competed in the Indy Racing League and recorded three victories (2000, 2001, and 2003), with his best finish in 2003 in 6th position overall. Since his retirement in 2007, Al has participated in numerous racing events such as the Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race in 2009, the Thunderhill Raceway Park in 2013, the Pro/Celebrity race in Long Beach in 2014, and most recently, the Sports Car Club of America Solo National Championship in 2015. In 2009, Al Unser Jr. was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America.

Regarding his personal life, Al Unser Jr. was married to Shelley from 1982-2001, and has been married to Gina Solo since 2004.

Al was arrested for driving under the influence and a misdemeanour hit and run in January 2007, following an accident near Henderson, Nevada. In September 2011, Al was arrested again for reckless driving and aggravated driving while intoxicated in Albuquerque, New Mexico, which resulted in a suspension from IndyCar.
